Following last week’s sailing tale, PR Week can now tell the story

of Tina Williamson, PR and marketing manager of Challenge Business - the

company run by Sir Chay Blyth which organises BT’s four-yearly Global

Challenge boat race.

Williamson has volunteered as a crew member for the race, which is

billed as ’the world’s toughest yacht race’.

The ten-month endurance test starts in Southampton in September and as

it goes by way of Boston, Buenos Aires, Sydney, and Cape Town, the race

promises to require a bit of effort. It means travelling against

prevailing currents all the way around the world.

Williamson is sure to avoid the development of professional rust in her

time away. She is the dedicated media officer for the spirIT team, a

consortium-sponsored boat whose 18 crew hope to benefit from the

largesse of sponsors such as Computacenter and Ericsson.

Her tasks will include filming the contest and her fellow crew members,

issuing press releases and liaising with race HQ back on the south

coast.

Plus, on top of all her PR duties she will also be an active crew

member.

’It’s a unique way to travel the world, and a live case study in PR and

marketing,’ Williamson says. It also raises funds for Save the Children.
