What The Papers Say: London’s wheel gets a resounding aye

While the Dome suffered from a rising tide of negative comment,

culminating in the appointment of one of Disney’s Rescuers, BA and NMEC

boss Bob Ayling accepted bouquets with one hand, while fending off

brickbats with the other. In a week of mixed press coverage for both BA

and Dome sponsors, BA’s sponsorship of the Eye was lauded by the

Financial Times as the ’publicity coup of the decade’.

Its passengers were united in acclaiming the ride as ’awe-inspiring’ and

the design as a worthy rival to the Eiffel Tower. Not one item last week

complained of a waste of money or estimated how many hospitals could be

built for the same price. Despite the extensive media derision it had

attracted for previous technical problems, its inaugural trip earned

paeons of praise, not only for the experience, but for BA for having the

foresight to invest in what might yet become a lasting feature of

London’s skyline.
