Paul Simpson was confirmed as Radio 1’s press and PR manager this
week, having served as acting head for the last year following the
departure of Polly Ravenscroft to head PR for BBC Production.
Simpson heads a team of four, but is recruiting a publicist for the
station’s specialist dance output. This appointment will also manage
publicity for the station’s outside broadcasts from Agia Napa, Ibiza and
a host of British music festivals.
Before assuming his current brief, Simpson was a publicist on the
station, responsible for promoting DJs such as Jo Whiley and Chris
Moyles. Prior to that, he worked as press and broadcasting officer for
the Liberal Democrats in Westminster.
Radio 1 handles most of its PR in-house, but since its target age group
is 15- to 24-year-olds, it uses youth agencies on a project basis for
specific acts. Slice PR handles some dance acts, while Henry’s House
acts as personal publicity agent for Jamie Theakston.
