Reuters Media Group has appointed PurplePatch, its first outside

agency since forming 18 months ago, after a four-way pitch.

The six-figure PR account is to promote the new media arm of Reuters

Global Information and News Group in the UK and Ireland.

The appointment coincides with the parent company’s pledge to spend

pounds 500 million over four years on internet development, shifting its

businesses on-line.

Reuters Media Group is already a content provider for web pages and

other new media outlets, supplying text, pictures, graphics and video to

clients such as BBC Online.

Geoffrey Wheating, Reuters Media Group director of strategic

development, said that UK business has been ’booming’ since the venture

was started.

PurplePatch managing director Bert Moore said: ’It will be a PR-driven

strategy to build their business.’

The campaign will be in three parts: an official launch of the service

in March; a media relations programme; and a series of partnerships,

such as conferences, which would have on-line and off-line

applications.

Reuters Media Group said it provides content for 900 websites

worldwide.

PurplePatch also handles PR for Levis, Nike, the NSPCC and The Prince’s

Trust.
