Shepherd joins Yahoo in new European post

Yahoo, the busiest web site on the internet, has appointed Lynn Shepherd as its first director of corporate communications for Europe.

Yahoo, the busiest web site on the internet, has appointed Lynn

Shepherd as its first director of corporate communications for

Europe.

She becomes responsible for communications throughout Yahoo’s eight

European markets - UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Spain

and Italy.

She reports to Yahoo’s European commercial director Jerry Glover. PR was

previously overseen by European marketing director Shelaine Green.

Shepherd was previously director of corporate communications for

Diageo.

She was the first to hold this position after the merger between

Guinness and GrandMet in 1997.

Her new role includes overall responsibility for corporate, consumer and

trade PR, internal communications and liaising withYahoo Inc, which is

based in California.

According to Shepherd, her first task will be to build up the in-house

PR team, which at present numbers two but is expected to double later

this year. Shepherd also said there was a ’possibility’ that she may

appoint a retained agency.

’We may be in the market for agencies but not until I have a clearer

idea of what we need. It may be corporate, consumer or pan-European,’

she said.

To date, the majority of PR is handled in-house, although various

European markets use their own local agencies. In the UK, Yahoo used Joe

Public Relations at the end of 1998 (PR Week, 4 December 1998) on a

two-month campaign, targeting the consumer technology press and

telecommunications media in promoting coverage of Yahoo’s

pay-as-you-surf service, Yahoo!Click.
