Sky picks new publicity head

Sky Networks has appointed John Brissenden, former controller of press and publicity at United Broadcasting and Entertainment, as publicity director.

Sky Networks has appointed John Brissenden, former controller of

press and publicity at United Broadcasting and Entertainment, as

publicity director.

Brissenden replaces Raymond Jaffe, who is leaving Sky after seven years

to set up his own marketing agency.

His appointment follows a brief spell as a director at Shine

Communications after being made redundant from United in a costs review

three months ago. Brissenden’s two years at United were preceded by a

stint at Granada, where he was corporate communications head.

He described the Sky job as ’the kind of thing you could not walk away

from’.

Brissenden will head a team of around 30 in the Sky publicity office,

handling listings information and PR for the broadcaster’s channels

(except sports, for which the PR is handled within the sports

department) as well as the pay-per-view service and the company’s

original production.

He said: ’The main challenge is to build on the successful

implementation of SkyDigital and provide a clear direction for the

publicity function within the overall context of the marketing

department.’

Brissenden added: ’The priority has to be driving the take-up of

SkyDigital.’

He will report to the consumer marketing director Scott Menner and

oversee deputy publicity director Fiona MacEachin and head of listings

Sarah Van Hesteven.

Sky Networks is still to announce a successor to corporate

communications director Tim Allan, who is leaving to study for an MBA.
