Tiscali - the Italian telecom and internet company valued at pounds

5 billion - has appointed financial PR agency Smithfield on a

pan-European brief.

The Sardinia-based firm, which introduced free internet access to Italy,

hired Smithfield Financial on six-figure annual retainer fees to advise

on its European financial PR and investor relations.

Agency director Valeria Vescina will lead the account, which was won

after a non-competitive pitch, working alongside Gerard Wichers, head of

investor relations.

Leading a team of five, Vescina has a brief to target the UK media and

UK-based pan-European media.

She will report to Tiscali’s senior management team: founder, chairman

and managing director Renato Soru; chief financial officer Massimo

Cristofori and chief technical officer Luigi Filippini.

Tiscali launched on the Nuovo Mercato stock exchange in Milan last

October, raising over pounds 88 million. Since the company launched in

1997, it has acquired a number of leading European ISPs and telecom

firms, such as Switzerland’s second biggest ISP Datacomm and

Belgium-based ISPs Link Line and Interweb.

Tiscali scrapped ideas to follow up last year’s IPO with the sale of a

further tranche of shares in March, instead launching a bond offering at

the end of June.
