The oil giant has brought in extra support as it emerged yesterday that billions of pounds had been wiped off BP's market value as it continues to attempt to shut down its massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Womack-Kolton served as Cheney's press aide during the 2004 election before running public affairs in the Department of Energy under President George W. Bush. She was also an assistant in the White House press office.

She has previously worked for the Brunswick Group and APCO Worldwide.
