Diary: Caffeine kicks in as Sorrell blows the froth off the cappuccino

It’s tough at the top, and the intensity can make you a tad irritable.

It’s tough at the top, and the intensity can make you a tad

irritable.

Ask Sir Martin Sorrell, top-dog at WPP.

The pressure had obviously been mounting prior to his announcement of

WPP’s soaring profits in the wake of the e-commerce explosion.

’PR is the froth of the cappuccino,’ several newspapers reported Sorrell

as figuratively expounding at the press gathering.

But when PRWeek rang to clarify the meaning of his Starbucks-inspired

metaphor, a most irritable Sorrell barked over his big coffee cup: ’I

didn’t say that. You’ve reported it wrong.’

When our hapless hack explained he was merely checking out the facts and

had as yet reported nothing, Sorrell, not so much slurped, as spat: ’I

don’t want to talk about PR. It’s all in the report.’ The phone went

dead, and the coffee most definitely chilled.

Irritable? Uptight? Right up against it? No time to think? Frothing at

the mouth? Relax, with a cappuccino - decaf, mind.
