International finance and employment consultancy William M Mercer

has appointed Ludgate Communications to handle its UK PR as it seeks to

raise awareness of its expanded range of services.

Mercer has traditionally helped large organisations implement and

administer pension schemes. However, it now offers consultancy on issues

such as health and welfare and employment law and aims to raise

awareness of this.

Ludgate won a three-way pitch against Positive Profile and Edelman PR

Worldwide. Total PR budget is pounds 200,000 and fees are pounds 100,000

per year.

Mary White, corporate communications facilitator at William M Mercer,

said: ’We want to raise our external profile. We are a traditional

consultancy firm broadening out from pensions into other employee

benefits and human resources areas.’

Ludgate’s media relations work will focus upon the pensions press and

specialist pages of the national press.

White, appointed five months ago, is the first Mercer employee to have

responsibility for corporate communications and reports directly to its

chief executive David Barford. She added: ’We have a good record with

our clients for our technical expertise but weren’t communicating this

externally.’

Mercer UK has staff in 13 locations and made profits in 1997 of pounds

15 million on turnover of pounds 96 million.
