US household products giant Procter and Gamble has appointed Gary

Cunningham as its public affairs and marketing director for the UK.

He replaces corporate affairs director Dick Johnson, who took early

retirement at the end of 1997 after over 30 years at the company.

Cunningham reports directly to P&G managing director and vice-president

Paul Polman and will be based at P&G headquarters in Gosforth, near

Newcastle.

He has worked at P&G for 15 years and was the company’s marketing

services director, handling market research, media relations, promotions

and advertising development before taking on his new role.

Cunningham will continue to oversee marketing services and will take on

the public affairs brief as an extra responsibility.

’The corporate affairs director title was created for Dick. Gary will be

doing the same job, the title is just a word change,’ said a P&G

spokeswoman.

P&G employs several agencies to support its divisional in-house PR

departments, including the Public Policy Unit for public affairs project

work in London and Brussels; Hill and Knowlton, which looks after the

company’s worldwide political monitoring; and Lowe Bell Good Relations,

which handles P&G brands Pantene, Fairy and Pampers.
