One of the world’s best-known toy brands, Meccano, has appointed

Consolidated Communications as lead agency on an international PR push

to modernise its image.

The campaign centres on Meccano’s centenary in the year 2000. Although

it has been owned by French businessman Dominique Duvauchelle since

1989, the construction toy was invented by UK train set pioneer Frank

Hornby.

Consolidated will co-ordinate agencies in Europe, the US and

Australia.

Meccano’s French agency is Nucleus, its German PR is handled in-house

and elsewhere agencies are retained by local distributors. The budget

has not yet been fixed.

Until the end of last year, Short and Partners handled Meccano’s public

relations in the UK and the agency was one of five Consolidated beat to

the account.

’Meccano has a great heritage - everybody remembers having some when

they were young,’ said Ellie Smedley, account director at

Consolidated.

A survey by Mintel shows sales of construction toys have dropped by 17

per cent since 1992. The main reason is cited as the lack of electronic

content in construction toys.
