Microsoft, the US-owned computer and IT giant, has hired Darren Briggs

as its first internal communications manager in the UK.

Briggs, a project manager for British Airways’ people development

department, joins Microsoft in August.

Based at its headquarters in Winnersh, near Reading, he will be in

charge of communicating with Microsoft’s 718 employees throughout its

offices in Winnersh, Edinburgh, London and Manchester.

He will report to Microsoft’s corporate communications manager - a post

which remains vacant following the departure of Madeline Crabb-Thomas

earlier this month.

External PRremains the responsibility of PR manager Colleen Farrell, who

reports directly to Shaun Orpen, director of marketing services.

A spokesman for the company said: ‘Microsoft has become quite a large

company and is committed to communications across the board, to its

customers, business partners, suppliers and employees.

‘The number of staff has been growing steadily and they want to ensure

that communications is done more effectively,’ he added.

Microsoft’s UK subsidiary has three main business units: sales and

marketing, product support services and Microsoft consulting services.

The company was founded in 1982 with only five staff.
