The Liberal Democrats have hired Jane Bonham-Carter as director of media

communications to bolster their press team for the run-up to the general

election.

She will work with director of strategy and planning Alan Leaman and

report to chief whip Archy Kirkwood MP.

It is the first time since Olly Grender left in May 1995 that the role

has been filled.

Bonham-Carter, who joins the party next month, has been editor of

Channel 4’s A Week in Politics for the past three years. She previously

worked on Newsnight and Panorama at the BBC.

‘We’re beefing up our act a bit at the top end,’ said Lib Dems head of

press and broadcasting Judith Fryer, who will report to Bonham-Carter.

‘We’re taking her on because she’s got so much experience in political

journalism.

Bonham-Carter will head up a press team of five. She will also work

closely with party leader Paddy Ashdown’s press officer Nick South.

Bonham-Carter has a long pedigree in Liberal politics. She is the

daughter of the late Liberal politician Lord Bonham-Carter and the

great-grand-daughter of Herbert Asquith, prime minister during the First

World War.

* The Lib Dems are currently seeking a press and broadcast officer to

work as part of Bonham-Carter’s team.
